Week

From Bible Exegesis

Jump to: navigation, search

From the beginning, time was divided into weeks, each consisting of six days of working and one of rest (Gen_2:2, Gen_2:3; Gen_7:10; Gen_8:10, Gen_8:12; Gen_29:28). The references to this division of days becomes afterwards more frequent (Exo_34:22; Lev_12:5; Num_28:26; Deu_16:16; 2Ch_8:13; Jer_5:24; Dan_9:24-27; Dan_10:2, Dan_10:3). It has been found to exist among almost all nations.

wēk (שׁבע, shebhua‛, from שׁבע, shebha‛, “seven”; σάββατον-τα, sábbaton-ta, “from sabbath to sabbath”):

The seven-day division of time common to the Hebrews and Babylonians (Gen_29:27, Gen_29:28; Luk_18:12). See Astronomy; Time. “Week” is used in the apocalyptic writings of Daniel for an unknown, prophetic period (Dan_9:24-27). For the names of the days see Astrology, 12.
